These worldwide indicate that antibiotics are frequently used irrationally. The study, conducted in Serbia, was to examine the prevalence of storage and use of antimicrobial agents in the "medicine chest" of inhabitants of Novi Sad in Serbia.
The study was conducted over 8 months (from December 2011 to July 2012). According to the telephone directory were randomly chosen families to visit and internal evaluation of stored antibiotics at home.
Total when visiting 318 homes was found 383 antibiotic, which was 7.3% of the total number of stored home medicines. Of the 383 families included in the study, antibiotics were kept in the home medicine cabinet at 178 (46.5%). In 13 families (7.3%) were found more than one identical packaging antibiotics. The average number of antibiotics kept single-family homes amounted to 1 (1 to 5). The most frequently detected in Serb families cephalexin (22.1%), amoxicillin (16.6%), doxycycline (11.4), co-trimoxazole (11.4%) and amoxicillin / clavulanate (9.2%), with antibiotics at the time of the survey were not used by any member of the family. The proportion of products with expired shelf life was 20.8%.
Thus, the present study demonstrated that antibiotics are widely distributed in the Serb families, and one in five drug appeared outdated. The leading role in reducing irrational use of antibiotics population must play an information and educational activities, the purpose of which is to improve public knowledge of antimicrobial drugs.
